New York’s top yoga and fitness instructors hop on the in-studio surfboard
Next month, some of New York’s top fitness and yoga instructors are going surfing—at Chelsea Market.
Surfset, a workout that uses a surfboard tricked out with Pilates-Reformer gadgetry, is teaming up with Rate Your Burn to open a fitness pop-up. It’ll feature six classes a day (with 18 spots per class) from April 3—May 3. And a star-studded faculty.
Instead of offering Surfset’s signature method (like the one currently offered at the Sports Center at Chelsea Piers), Rate Your Burn recruited top New York fitness instructors—gurus of yoga, Pilates, dance, boot camps, and more—and asked them to get on (the) board and take New Yorkers for a ride.
“They can do anything they want—they can name their classes, create different levels, and some people will even bring props,” says Rate Your Burn founder, Gillian Casten. “Surfset wanted to just show how cool the board is and how many things you can do with it.”
The list of instructors who have signed on so far is like a Who’s Who of New York fitness—Flywheel’s Holly Rilinger, former NFL player and Training C.A.M.P. creator Curtis Williams, IntenSati founder Patricia Moreno, and Barry’s Bootcamp’s Keoni Hudoba and Joey Gonzalez. Not to mention big-name yogis like Isaac Pena, I.AM.YOU’s Lauren Imparato, and Equinox fave Johan Montijano.
We’re pulling on our Hawaiian shirt now.
Surfset is banking on the instructors’ ability to take the RipSurfer X (the name of the surfboard-Reformer) to new levels, and to command a following who will then fall in love with the board.
“We want to get it in front of more people and get more involved in the New York fitness community,” says Sarah Ponn, the creator of the SurfSet method.
They’ll need the momentum, since the brand will be looking for a permanent way to stay in New York while the pop-up works its magic.
And Rate Your Burn will also catch the wave—they’ll be launching the full version of their website right as the Chelsea Market classes wrap-up. —Lisa Elaine Held
