The pop-up shop model has been used for fitness, juice, and natural beauty in the past year. Now, a New York musician is applying it to yoga.

Angelica Olstad is launching her company, Pop Up Yoga NYC, with a full day of yoga, healthy food, and natural beauty at Dekalb Market on Sunday, July 29.

Olstad says the idea for Pop Up Yoga came to her after she had trouble finding ways to teach yoga as a brand-new teacher-training graduate. “The yoga world is just so saturated in New York,” she says. “My personal path became about trying to find nontraditional places to bring yoga to.”

But for the Dekalb kickoff, instead of teaching, she’ll provide live accompaniment on the piano. The two free classes (11 a.m and 4 p.m.) will be taught by Be Shakti (4 p.m.), an instructor at Brooklyn’s Prana Power Yoga and Astoria’s The Yoga Room.

The event also includes lots of other wellness elements. Organic Avenue and VitaCoco will be there, and Sprout Skincare will be selling natural beauty products. And, of course, the rest of Dekalb Market will be open as usual, for you to browse the many vendors’ wares.

Olstad is already planning a second event on August 30, which will take place at White Rabbit, a Lower East Side bar and art gallery. The yoga class will be set to a DJs soundtrack, and juices will be replaced with green tea martinis.

As the concept grows, she plans to donate event profits to organizations that bring yoga into environments that are even more unlikely—like centers for at-risk youth and prisons. —Lisa Elaine Held
