Class Action: Zumba Toning at Simply Fit Astoria

Simply Fit Astoria

Simply Fit Astoria, founded by Lisa Eskenazi, is a neighborhood no-frills fitness studio. Zumba—in all its varieties—is its bread and butter, and the Toning version is the most popular class. (At a class a couple of days after Sandy, the room was wall-to-wall with women ranging from 20-somethings to grandmothers.)

Zumba Toning alternates between dance sequences set by the Zumba powers-that-be and sequences with light weights. With the weights, the class kind of feels like a Latin-flavored Tracy Anderson Method, only without the cool factor.

Music is a mix of salsa, reggaeton, and upbeat pop, and the steps are simple enough so you don’t waste time stumbling over your feet. “I try to keep them easy so that people get a good workout,” Eskenazi says.

Eskenazi is also an ACE-certified trainer, which adds element of athleticism. Overall, it’s a moderate cardio workout with light arm toning, and a happy-making dose of pretension-free dance time, which means you’ll leave sweaty, and smiling.

Who’s it for: Queens residents who like to get their dance cardio on.
