Refrigerator Look Book: Sara Jane Mercer
Sara Jane Mercer is a holistic health coach and recipe developer who stocks healthy how-to videos—like “How to Peel Fresh Ginger” and “How to Make Almond Milk”—on her website and blog, Clean, Pure and Simple.
Her recipes can be found in publications like Whole Living, and the Manhattan-resident also hosts “edu-catering” parties where she shares healthy food knowledge, cooking lessons, and natural beauty demos.
We peeked in her super-organized refrigerator to see what she stocks, cooks, and eats at home, and found lots of creative recipes in the works—and the healthiest dog-food drawer ever.
Wow, is your fridge really always this organized? This is slightly disorganized, actually! My husband and I are very Type A, so it pretty much always looks very neat. I’m a very meticulous person.
Impressive. What kind of green juice is that? Those are from Liquiteria. They’re mostly my husband’s, he loves them. I do, too, but I have a good friend who has a Norwalk and makes juices for me each week and delivers them by hand, stroller and all. So I get to see the baby too, which is fun. I didn’t have any here, but I usually have six delivered Tuesday and six on Friday, and they last me throughout the week.
Are all of the canisters on the top shelf filled with nuts? One is a test-batch of granola that I’m making. It’s nut-free, grain-free, vegan, gluten-free, made with pumpkin, chia, sunflower seeds, coconut nectar, and spices. And yes, I have lots of nuts because I’m big into healthy fats.
Yum. Can you give me a quick run-down of what’s hiding in the bottom drawers? On the right it’s mostly prepared vegetables, artichoke hearts and steamed beets to throw on a salad, rosemary, knobs of ginger, apples, zucchinis, avocados, peppers. And on the left, our dog has her own drawer, since she’s the only one in the house who eats meat! She eats these meat patties and also blueberries, carrots, kale—she gets veggies in every meal. She’s a very healthy dog.
Your dog might be the healthiest ever. You have what looks like a lot of baked goods—let’s discuss! The glass container in the middle is another test-batch. They’re muffin-size coffee cakes that I’m making and selling for the holidays. They’re vegan and gluten-free, made with almond butter, spices, bananas. And all of those packaged goods on the bottom shelf on the left are raw treats from One Lucky Duck. This picture was taken on my birthday, actually, and my friend Stephanie brought me over a package of those indulgent, delicious things.
Happy belated birthday! Does that explain some of the wine then, too? You know, it’s funny, I’ll have a glass of wine when I’m out, but I’m actually not a wine person, and we don’t drink at all at home. If I’m entertaining, people just always bring us wine and champagne as hostess gifts. We’ll serve it then.
Ha! As a healthy recipe developer, what are the most important things to always have on hand? At the beginning of the week I squeeze two or three dozen lemons. Basic spices like garlic and ginger. I always have two bunches of kale on hand, because we go through it so much. And a good amount of nuts and seeds, fresh fruit, and fresh herbs. I also have an embarrassing amount of liquid Stevia because I use it as my primary sweetener. And coconut oil. I don’t like to heat olive oil, so I use coconut in all my cooking. —Lisa Elaine Held
