Huffington Post Healthy LivingIf you haven’t been asleep for all of 2012, you’ve probably heard the praises of foam rolling. I’m not one to jump on trends for the trend’s sake, but this is no joke! Foam rolling helps to create and maintain long, smooth muscles by massaging out the knots and releasing trigger points. It’s also a fantastic and cheap way to release the fascia, which I’m sure you already know all about! Unless a doctor tells you otherwise, this is a fabulous addition to any healthy living routine.

Here are my three favorite exercises on the foam roller:

1. IT Band stretch: Lie on your side, using your hands for support. Bend the top leg to unload some of the pressure and maintain balance. Roll from your hip down to the knee and be sure to rest on any soft spots to encourage release.

    While the foam roller is a great ancillary tool for fitness, the stretch to create more exercises than are actually really useful is a typical bi-product of the fitness industy.
    The very common ITB stretch/ massage (#1) in your article, seems to reamin on the top of the foam rollers hit-parade fro the past 10 plus years. Why? People certainly feel it. Its painful. It really doesn’t work. The IT Band is a band of fascia. It is not a muscle. This exercise only helps when paired w inner though stregnthening and retraining of a narrower gait and stance.
