Class Action: Doonya

Doonya Bollywood dance fitness class

A Doonya dance cardio fitness class in Chelsea.

Remember the closing scene of “Slumdog Millionaire” when you felt like dancing in aisles with Dev Patel and Freida Pinto? Well, Doonya will unleash your inner Bollywood dancer. The irrepressible dance workout is poised to be the next Zumba, geared toward people who love Bollywood music and moves.

The brainchild of Priya Pandya and Kajal Mehta (both Indian dancer performers), Doonya started out as a dance program. It quickly morphed into an hour-long fitness class with strength and flexibility training added to the dance workout.

You’ll learn the “Bollywood tap,” and lots of other cinematic dance-floor flourishes, through super-short choreographed routines. We were surprised by how easy it was to catch on—much easier than Zumba because it requires less hip action. And we loved how instructor (and founder) Priya Pandya said a few words about the cultural significance or meaning of each song. How many fitness classes have a cultural component?

Doonya’s already been featured on “Oprah,” and seems to be on the morning-show circuit, plus the company’s about to launch a DVD. So while there are just about ten weekly classes offered New York City right now, we expect to be seeing a lot more of them soon.

Who’s it for: Bollywood-lovers. Dance cardio junkies in search of a new experience. Zumba defectors.

Doonya, $20, Chelsea and Midtown West locations, www.doonya.com
