Recipe: Berry Detox Smoothie

`September Smoothie Recipe

(Photo: Jennifer Kass for Well+Good)

Between the insane variety of in-season fruits and veggies and abundance of outdoor workout options, summer can be a seriously healthy few months. But for many of us, it’s also the season of cocktailing, cavorting, and scarfing down ice cream cones.

Which makes September the perfect time to hit the reset button by pulling back the reins on sugar and caffeine. This detoxifying blend helps on both counts, providing a super-boost of energy while slashing sugar cravings with its all-natural sweetness.

Antioxidant-rich, get-them-while-they’re-still-good berries are low-glycemic, so they help keep blood sugar levels in check—as does energy-boosting raw honey, which isn’t just a beauty secret beloved by royalty.

Ginger promotes energy circulation in the body (and, if you happen to have your period, can help with cramps). And omega-3 rich chia seeds keep you full and support brain health. Which is good news, whether you’re headed back to school or not. —Jennifer Kass

What do you mean by “Detoxifying”?

Although raw honey is one of the healthiest sweeteners, it still should be used in moderation. With the sweetness of the fruit in this smoothie it would be good to try to reduce the amount of honey used to get used to less sweet tastes. Try also adding some green leaves to make a healthy green smoothie to help with detox.

Perfect! I have some berries in the freezer and I was looking for another smoothie recipe. I may add a bit of spinach or other greens to this :)
