This Magnesium-Rich Watermelon Electrolyte Drink Is the Most Refreshing Way To Recover After Exercise

While I'm generally one to look to foods to fill my nutrient quotas for the day, I find it nearly impossible to stay well-hydrated—and as often as I lug my 40-ounce Stanley cup everywhere I go, it’s seldom that I actually get around to finishing the entire damn thing.

This is why I was particularly excited to hear about Moon Juice’s newest product, Mini Dew ($44, also available via Amazon), a two-in-one daily electrolyte and multimineral powder supplement that aims to support hydration and brain function. (They’re also the makers of Moon Juice’s Magnesium-Om ($42), a key ingredient of TikTok's beloved sleepy girl mocktail.)

Seeing how much I loved Moon Juice's magnesium-based product, my hopes for the Mini Dew were less than mini. The TL; DR? My expectations have been superseded—this product is so worth the splurge and has helped me power through the HIIT workouts I’d been suffering through testing out this month.

What makes Moon Juice’s Mini Dew so great

Let’s delve right in. Unlike many other electrolyte powders on the market, Mini Dew is formulated with over 72 ionic trace minerals and five chelated essential minerals (more bioavailable)to support brain function, mood, and recovery, with zero grams of sugar, a fraction of the sodium content in other electrolytes, and produced with 100 percent traceable ingredients. Indeed, this all sounds very promising, but what does it actually mean for us?

According to Amanda Chantal Bacon, the founder of Moon Juice, Mini Dew was created for folks looking for a high-quality, no-fuss product minus unnecessary additives. “Mini Dew was inspired by a need. I couldn’t find a zero-sugar, organically-flavored electrolyte that I could take daily—not just for major sweating or puking,” Bacon says. As such, the founder focused on sourcing microplastic-free pink salt and dosed the sodium for optimal cellular hydration “rather than jacking the sodium up to elite athlete levels that leave most people feeling dehydrated.”

And who doesn’t love a good BOGO deal? “I love to stack habits, so we turned it into a two-in-one by pairing Mini Dew with chelated forms of potassium and magnesium. This means it's both an electrolyte supplement and a daily comprehensive mineral supplement with the gold standard of ionic trace minerals and five chelated essential minerals,” Bacon says. This is significant, as magnesium is a hugely common nutrient deficiency and electrolyte imbalances can result in fatigue, malaise, altered mental status, headache, dizziness, irregular heart rhythm, and muscle spasms. The five chelated essential minerals found in Mini Dew are meant to help combat these imbalances.

My thoughts on the Mini Dew electrolyte powder

As much as I love other electrolyte powders on the market, I often find that they’re overly sweet and tend to upset my stomach. My usual workaround is only using half a stick of powder at a time. The Mini Dew, in that respect, is far different from the others. It has a very palatable flavor—this one tastes like a hint of watermelon—and is only mildly salty. Think fresh watermelon with a pinch of salt with a pretty pink hue, thanks to beetroot. The serving size is also only one teaspoon per 12 ounces of water—which becomes heavily diluted and is easy to down in a few gulps. Although adults can have up to eight servings of Mini Dew per day.

As Bacon mentioned, the product is dosed for optimal cellular hydration for daily activities; however, if engaging in more strenuous activity that may disrupt electrolyte balance, adjusting dosage is more than easy to do. During my experience of testing this product for about almost two weeks, I’ve done just that. On a regular day, when I spend most of my time working at my desk, I’ll add one (maybe two) teaspoons to my reusable water bottle and sip on it throughout the day. However, I’ve been integrating more strenuous workouts into my weekly routine, including two rather intense HIIT workouts where ensuring I have sufficient electrolytes, especially as I recover, is of utmost importance.

When I know I’ll be attending a tough workout class, I double up on my dose of Mini Dew and have about two to three teaspoons, which I’ve noticed has made a significant impact on my energy levels. Immediately after drinking it, I consistently experience a small energy spike. But is it a placebo effect? In all honesty, I’m not sure. But my energy levels and focus seem to increase after consuming Mini Dew each time, which might be indicative that it’s doing its job.

However, the biggest perk of this electrolyte-boosting powder (IMO) is that it gives me zero stomach ache. I repeat zero (!), which is a huge win in my ultra-sensitive stomach book. That’s to say, Mini Dew has earned a permanent spot in my leaning-tower-of-supplements cabinet, and so far, so (very) good.
