Before we dive into why we love the dual refiner, we have to talk about the person who made this product possible—Priscilla Jiminian, the company's founder. As an Afro-Latina, Jiminian struggled to find products that worked well for her skin, specifically acne marks and hyperpigmentation. "There were a limited amount of options out there for women like me, especially in cosmetics and skincare," Jiminian tells Well+Good.

While on a trip to the Dominican Republic to visit her family, Jiminian's cousin introduced her to a formulator who helped develop a product that targeted dark spots. At first, the dark spot corrector was made solely for Jiminian and she didn't intend to sell it. After posting about her product and skin-care routine on Instagram, women of color grew curious. Jiminian realized the need for products made by women of color and sought to bring much-needed representation to the beauty industry. Thus, Skinergy Beauty was born. The company was started in 2018 and now has six product offerings ranging from a skin balance toner to a dark spot correcting cream.
The dual refiner is the newest offering from Skinergy Beauty's skin-care collection. It contains key ingredients for dry skin, including eucalyptus, jojoba, grapeseed oil, and vitamin C and B5. "Vitamin C has shown to have many important functions in [the] skin. It improves the barrier, making the skin stronger and healthier, and ultimately improves how it retains moisture," says Rachel Nazarian, MD, FAAD, board-certified dermatologist based in New York. Dr. Nazarian also tells Well+Good that eucalyptus has shown to improve ceramide levels which increases the skin's ability to retain water and the jojoba can calm irritated skin.
My skin tends to run on the drier side so when I found this product, I was thrilled to hear all about its hydrating benefits. When I apply the refiner, I leave the mask on until it dries. Then, I'll apply some water to activate the exfoliator and rub in circular motions to slough off dead skin. After washing the refiner off, I notice how my face feels smoother, softer, and more hydrated.
