The $5 Soap a Derm Swears by for Treating Acne, Rosacea, and Dermatitis
According to Azadeh Shirazi, MD, a California-based board-certified dermatologist who goes by @SkinByDrAzi on TikTok, Sulfur 10% Bar Soap works wonders for treating acne breakouts, rosacea, seborrheic dermatitis, and perioral dermatitis. "Sulfur contains natural anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and keratolytic properties, thus addressing the three main components causing acne and breakouts," New York City–based dermatologist Libby Rhee, DO, previously told Well+Good. "In other words, this single ingredient can improve redness, combat the Propionibacterium acnes bacterium in the skin, and help the skin shed and reproduce itself more efficiently, which decreases pore clogging,"
Unlike traditional bar soaps, which have a tendency to strip the skin due to their high pH levels, Dr. Shirazi notes that this sulfur bar has “has calming effects on the skin," and is totally fine to use on dry and sensitive complexions. That said, she notes that it's probably not the best option for those with eczema, nor will it help treat comedones. She also mentions that despite being made with sulfur, the soap is likely not a cause for concern for those with sulfur allergies. “Many people who are allergic to sulfa antibiotics orally are not sensitive to topical sulfur,” she says.

As far as how often to wash your face with the soap, she told one user to slowly incorporate it into their routine, starting with once daily and gradually working up to AM and PM cleanses. Then, follow it up with the rest of your routine. The only downfall is that you'll have to deal with the infamous (and admittedly, unappealing) "rotten egg" smell that comes along with sulfur-infused products, but the good news is it washes off with water. And of course, it's a small price to pay for a $5 product that tackles all of your most stubborn skin concerns in a single lather and rinse.
