While this organic designation does not necessarily speak to the eco-friendliness of these products, which is a separate distinction, it's worth noting that organic-farming methods do eliminate the use of pesticides and fertilizers, which can otherwise pollute groundwater, and tend to utilize less water, too.
On the flip side, while you might spot sustainable or "natural" bedding made with bamboo or eucalyptus, the viscose process used to transform these raw materials, extract their cellulose, and spin it into fine fabric strands involves certain chemicals not needed to process fabrics like cotton and linen. As a result, while these options are typically eco-friendly, they aren't technically organic, from start to finish. (Even so, you may still feel comfortable buying them, particularly if they sport the OEKO-Tex Standard 100 certification, which signifies that each component of the final product—though, not the manufacturing process—has been tested for potentially harmful chemicals, according to Foley.)

With this in mind, folks who are prone to irritation or have any skin sensitivities are likely best off with GOTS-certified organic bedding, says Foley. But, that designation alone also does not necessarily speak to the bedding's quality. "When shopping for organic sheets, for example, you should still evaluate the same qualities as you would for a non-organic option," she says. "That includes weave and knit type (say, sateen versus percale), staple (which refers to the length of the cotton fibers, with extra-long typically being the softest), and thread count."
