The 1 Skin Care Trend That Gets Our Senior Beauty Editor’s Seal of Approval
For the unordained, slugging is a K-beauty practice that involves spreading a layer of occlusive—like a thick moisturizer or petroleum jelly—over your other skin-care layers before you go to bed. This helps your skin lock in moisture and retain the benefits of the other beauty products you've applied (like your moisturizer, hyaluronic acid, retinol—et cetera). "The idea is that it will seal in all the moisture from your skin and all the goodness from the products you've used. That way, you'll wake up feeling hydrated, nourished," explains Weiner in the episode.
Slugging is especially great for those with dry skin. "I’m obsessed with using Vaseline as a facial moisturizer," Mona Gohara, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Connecticut, previously told Well+Good. "I use [Vaseline] morning and night, but I don’t slug. I just use small amounts to repair my skin barrier. In small amounts, it rejuvenates and hydrates the skin to help it glow."
That said, slugging may not be the best if you're dealing with rosacea or acne. Although Vaseline is non-comedogenic—meaning it doesn't clog your pores—it still may not be the best option for those who tend to be oily. Instead, opt for a moisturizer that contains ceramides (which Dr. Gohara notes will have a similar effect).
