What inspired you to become a trainer?
Growing up as the 18th child out of 19, I got to embrace the extremes of discipline and chaos before moving out on my own at 16 years old. In college, my dean encouraged me to hit the gym to find balance as a performer. As I trained, my body took shape and everywhere I would go, people would ask for my advice about fitness.
"My fitness philosophy is not so much about what you’re doing, it’s about being clear about who you want to be."
When I would work out with colleagues in the entertainment industry and would see the results they were creating in their body, mind, and spirit. I made it my business to keep them encouraged and motivated, and I learned that the more I did that, the more I became encouraged and motivated.
What's the most surprising thing you've learned about being a fitness pro?
I never set out to mix being spiritual and being a fitness pro, but I discovered that for me, they are the same. When a client is feeling emotionally unstable and depressed, as they train with me, naturally the endorphins increase and they feel better. People are often crying or laughing a lot in my sessions. It was very surprising at first, but now I love it!
The winner of America’s Most Inspiring Trainer will score a one-year contract with Reebok and major coverage on Well+Good. Cast your vote now!
