Why Chromat Was the Most Empowering Show at NYFW

Diversity has been the name of the fashion game for several seasons now as the fashion industry starts to embrace a more expansive idea of who gets to wear designer clothes.

But the belief that any body—no matter how it's shaped or what it looks like—should get to wear powerful, statement-making clothing has always been inherent to the work of Chromat founder Becca McCharen-Tran, who's dressed stars like Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Madonna, and Ariana Grande since launching the label in 2010.

"What you see on the runway is very much that change we want to see with body diversity, celebrating women of all sizes, all places on the gender spectrum, all ages, and everything else."

Chromat has consistently been about dressing inclusively, casting models of varying skin tones, body sizes, and ages in its runway shows. The brand advanced its mission with its spring/summer 2018 show at New York Fashion Week, featuring an even more diverse cast of models than in past shows.

"What you see on the runway is very much that change we want to see," McCharen-Tran said backstage, "with body diversity, celebrating women of all sizes, all places on the gender spectrum, all ages, and everything else."

And when you see such a wide-spanning representation of humanity wearing the bomb-ass denim and metallic pieces from this season's collection, you get a sense for why Chromat is one of the coolest labels in fashion today.
