Hummus Ice Cream Is Here to Answer Your Healthy (Vegan!) Dessert Dreams
The Hummus & Pita Co.—which already has three New York City locations and is expanding to Connecticut, Colorado, New Jersey, Michigan, and California—saw so much success with its hummus shake that it took things up a notch by also releasing four flavors of ice cream: chocolate, strawberry, cookies and cream, and banana almond, an emailed press release notes. Right now, the treat is available at its Chelsea location in Manhattan and will be ready to scoop at all shops starting August 1. But, you may be wondering how healthy it could possibly be.
"This all started when I developed the dessert hummus as a healthier alternative for my daughter, and the response from my family was so great that we wanted to share it with the Hummus & Pita Co. guests." —Dave Pesso, founder
This treat is packed with standard hummus ingredients—chickpeas and tahini—as well as some natural sweeteners to make it dessert-worthy. None of the flavors contain straight-up sugar; rather the sweetness comes from ripe, fiber-rich dates. The creaminess is all due to almond milk or coconut cream, making every flavor gluten-free, dairy-free, and vegan—something that's been important to the company's founder Dave Pesso since the beginning. "This all started when I developed the dessert hummus as a healthier alternative for my daughter, and the response from my family was so great that we wanted to share it with the Hummus & Pita Co. guests," he says in the release.
If a Hummus & Pita Co. isn't local to you, try DIYing your own dessert hummus at home. After adding a few additional good-for-you ingredients to the already healthy dip, the result might just become a freezer staple.
