Katy Perry is undergoing a reinvention of sorts. First, the 32-year-old pop star spent 72 hours live-streaming her every move (including an emotional therapy session) so fans could get to know the real Perry (er, Katheryn Hudson). And on Sunday, the veteran of several high-profile relationships opened up to nighttime radio host Delilah about how to move on from a bad breakup.
"It's like a lesson in self-control. You send it to your best friend."
On her Conversations with Delilah podcast, Perry told the host that her "Save as Draft" single was inspired by real-life events. "I've been in that cycle before in a relationship and it had kind of reignited the relationship, and there's only so many times you can reignite the relationship, or want to, or should, and sometimes you just need to write it and never send it," Perry says about firing off that cathartic post-breakup text.
But the key, she says, is not pressing send. "It's like a lesson in self-control," Perry says. "You send it to your best friend." Perry admits that her emotions are heightened in the evening, so the trick is to draft the text and then sleep on it without putting it out into the world. "Then in the morning when I wake up, I'm like, 'Oh, I'm so glad I didn't send that! I can get through another day without this situation,'" she says. Consider it a mini-digital detox, combo'ed with a heartache cure. (And you can always try Perry's other breakup go-to: a hypnotist.)

Staying in an unhappy relationship is surprisingly common. Here's why. So instead of sending that worked-up text, start snoozing—your dreams just may make your relationship healthier.
