Why Sofia Vergara’s New Underwear Company Is a Huge Deal for #bossbabe Business Owners
Sofia Vergara just launched EBY (Empowered by You), an underwear subscription box for women of all shapes and sizes. But EBY's body-positive intent is only part of its applaudable mission: The company donates 10 percent of net sales to help women start their own businesses.
By partnering with The Seven Bar Foundation, a nonprofit that uses microfinancing (which helps folks who likely wouldn't qualify for bank loans) to fund #bossbabes around the world, Vergara's goal is to give other women the chance to succeed. And the first donation is going directly to Colombia, where both Vergara and co-founder Renata M. Black are from, Self reports.
"I want to be able to provide women with the tools to start their own business as an exit out of poverty."
"I want to be able to provide women with the tools to start their own business as an exit out of poverty. EBY does that with its microfinancing model," Vergara said in a statement. "There’s nothing sexier than being your own boss."
Different ranges of loans are distributed to female entrepreneurs depending on where they live. For instance, according to the release, a woman who wants to start a fish stand in India would receive $80, while a women starting up an Etsy shop in the US could get up to $2,600. Once the business starts to grow, the woman pays it forward, and the funds she received are passed along to another woman who can then start her own business.
