The word “playboy” may conjure images of bunny ears, centerfolds, and a number of more recent accounts of abuse from women who worked with the brand and its founder, Hugh Hefner. Criticisms that Playboy, both the publication and its associated brand enterprises, monetized the male gaze and contributed to the objectification and normalization of emotional and physical abuse of women are fair. And in the past few years, the company—now run without oversight or control from Hefner's family—has taken steps to acknowledge problems and change. For starters, the magazine ceased publication in 2020 and has since focused on a strategy rooted in e-commerce; its slogan is no longer "entertainment for men" but rather "pleasure for all"; and people who identify as women reportedly now account for half of its consumer base. So, entering the sex toy industry is a logical next step for the brand's interest in celebrating pleasure equity. Enter: Playboy Pleasure, the brand's just-launched sex-toy line.

This week, Playboy Pleasure launched exclusively at online sexual-health-product store Lovers. Perhaps the most surprising part of this venture, though, is why such a logical product match—Playboy plus sex toys—took so long to happen. Well, after shuttering the print magazine, Playboy shifted its focus to Playboy-designed products including lingerie, denim, and sleepwear, which PLBY Group President of Global Consumer Products Ashley Kechter tells me have been successful. Sex toys were next in line.

Most of the toys in the Playboy Pleasure collection are similar to any other mid-price toys on the market. What sets them apart, however, is each is emblazoned with the brand's iconic rabbit head logo.

As for Playboy Pleasure's 34 toys, variety is the name of the game. The line includes a take on classic sex toy shapes. The Playboy Bullet ($42) and Playboy Palm ($98), for example, are iterations of a bullet vibrator and palm vibrator, respectively. Made from high-quality silicone (and other body-safe materials), functionally, most of the toys in this collection are similar to any other mid-price toys on the market. What sets them apart, however, is that each is emblazoned with the brand's iconic rabbit head logo, says Kechter: “This enables users to feel an emotional connection to our playful, pleasure-filled brand,” she says. Essentially, these products work but they don't reinvent the wheel (or, er, buzz). But there are a few standouts.

Meet the most unique toy in the collection: The 3 Way

Pleasure product collectors may find most of the Playboy Pleasure sex toys to be derivative, given how many of the products are nearly identical to others on the market. However, there are a couple that offer something unique. Most notably is a souped-up toy for penis-havers called The 3 Way ($116). Named for the fact that it provides vibrations to three different erogenous zones, it functions as a vibrating cock ring with an external shaft vibrator and prostate stimulator.

This silicone option is designed to provide stimulation to the person who is wearing the toy as well as the person (or people) receiving penetration in a partnered (or multi-partnered) scenario, says Marla Renee Stewart, MA, a sex educator with Lovers. The toy features two rings, rather than the one you’ll find on most C-rings, she says. One of the rings goes around the base of the shaft to trap blood in the penis, while the other goes underneath the testicles. Together, these rings work to support the intensity and integrity of the erection.

The 3 Way also uses a swath of textured silicone to stimulate the wearer's nerve-dense perineum and a cylindrical arm that provides vibration along the upper portion of their shaft, says Stewart. “This toy also takes the person who is receiving penetration in mind with the addition of a vibrator that protrudes from the toy by the top of the wearer’s penis,” she says. If the receiver has a vulva, this portion of the toy can stimulate their clitoris during penetrative intercourse. Meanwhile, if the receiver has a penis, this portion can pleasure their perineum.

This versatility is exactly why Stewart calls this sex toy one of the most inclusive toys on the market. “It's the perfect gender-neutral toy and its diversity of parts makes it a great tool for just about anyone, and any gender or genital combination,” she says.
