Why choose a silk pillowcase?
From a hair standpoint, silk is softer and less absorbent than cotton, which means it’s less likely to dry out your strands. “Silk allows the hair to move easily over the pillowcase without friction, thereby keeping its style in place,” Marnie Nussbaum, MD, a New York City dermatologist, previously told Well+Good. “It also allows the hair to keep its natural oils and prevents frizz and dehydration.”
Sabrina Porsche, a hairstylist based in Los Angeles, swears by silk pillowcases. And sometimes when her hair is really acting up, she’ll sleep on silk sheets just in case she doesn’t spend the entire night on her pillow.
“I use silk pillowcases as well as scrunchies and eye masks,” says Porche. She typically sleeps with a bonnet at night to retain her style, but when her boyfriend is over, she ditches the bonnet and relies on her silk pillowcase. “I don’t ever want him to see my hair wrapped—at least not yet, we haven’t gotten there yet.” She says sleeping with a silk pillowcase keeps her style “pretty much the same. I’m not a wild sleeper and I pretty much sleep on one side, so I’ll wake up and it’ll keep my hair preserved.”
Silk’s less-absorbent qualities also offer benefits to your skin. “Cotton pillowcases can potentially absorb moisture and hydration from skin and hair leaving the skin dehydrated and increasing the appearance of fine lines,” says Dr. Nussbaum. “While there is no scientific evidence, decreasing the friction between the skin and the pillowcase could also potentially minimize fine lines.”
While satin pillowcases are a more cost-effective option, if silk pillowcases are within your budget, they’ll give you the full hair and skin benefits and honestly feel so much better.
