When it comes to the art of skin care, Angelina Jolie became a master at an early age. The actress started seeing dermatologist Rhonda Rand, MD, at 11 years old, courtesy of her diligent mother (hey, it’s never too early to take care of yourself!), and she’s still using the pro tip she learned as a little girl: Keep your products and routine as natural and simple as possible.
According to Dr. Rand, Jolie has only ever needed a fuss-free routine: “It was really just sunscreen, proper cleansing with a mild, gentle cleanser, antioxidants, sometimes glycolic [acids], and natural products. Some alpha hydroxy [acids] are good, too. She doesn’t need major scrubs or products with lots of chemicals,” Dr. Rand told Refinery29. And that regimen doesn’t change when she’s jet-setting: Jolie always takes her skin care with her.
“She’s olive-skinned like her mom, but it’s not like she lets herself get dark. She’s been so good about using sunscreen from such an early age to protect her skin.” —Dr. Rand
Another key to getting Jolie-worthy skin? Going makeup-free à la Christina Aguilera whenever possible and making sure you hydrate your skin. “The thing about [Jolie] is she never wears makeup unless she’s working—it’s probably another reason her skin looks good,” Dr. Rand says. “She’s also good about removing makeup. I know her makeup artist is super careful about what she puts on her skin and takes good care of it when she’s working.”

On the opposite end of makeup, something Jolie never skimps on is protecting her skin. “She’s olive-skinned like her mom, but it’s not like she lets herself get dark. She’s been so good about using sunscreen from such an early age to protect her skin,” Dr. Rand says.
So, sure, genetics seem to be on the side of Jolie’s bright complexion, but her flawless mug gives strong evidence to keeping your skin-care routine as simple and natural as possible. And as for your assortment of summer floppy hats? Consider this your doc-approved excuse to expand your collection.
