What should you look for in a lip liner?
According to Sewell, what you should look for in a lip liner is dependent on what works for you. Consider what attributes are most important to you—do you want something hydrating and soft? Or are you looking for a one-and-done application? Dominic suggests considering formula and texture to begin with—while a creamier formula will blend and apply more easily, a drier one will last longer. If longevity is important to you, look for liners that market themselves as long-wearing and smudge-resistant. Lastly, color and undertone are very important when it comes to picking a lip liner. Sewell suggests looking for something similar to your natural lip color—just a little more enhanced. Like any makeup product, nothing is a one size (or one shade) fits all.
The benefits of using a lip liner
The right lip liner can really enhance your overall look—adding color and shape to the lips and adding dimension to the face. Lip liner helps create a fuller, more-defined lip, adding definition and balance.
How to use lip liner
Perhaps even more important than applying the liner itself is the prep you do before hand. "I always say lip mask while you glam, wipe away before liner, powder your lips before liner, then line," Sewell explains. "This hydrates your lips but gives a tacky dry base for the liner, so it glides but lasts." When actually lining the lips, Dominic suggests using short, light-handed strokes to outline the natural border of your lips. You can always build up the effect as you see fit. If you plan to overline, McElroy suggests focusing on the middle top and bottom of the lips—going too far out on the corners creates a downturned appearance that can have an aging effect on the face.
