These Shampoo and Conditioner Bars Have Turned Our Editors Into Solid Shampoo Believers

Traditionally, solid shampoos and conditioners have been a whole lot better in theory than in practice. We’ve long known that ditching the bottle is one of the easiest tweaks you can make to de-plasticize your beauty routine, but the bars that are supposed to take their place have left much to be desired as far as efficacy goes. Over the years, I’ve tried options that have disintegrated in my hands, lathered insufficiently or not at all, and made me feel like I was washing my hair with a bar of soap. But as beauty brands have made sustainability a priority (instead of an afterthought), solid haircare formulations have gotten good enough to rival the stuff you’d usually find in a bottle, and Superzero is leading the charge.

The brand, which launched in 2020, delivers plastic-free hair and skin-care products that really deliver on results. So much so, in fact, that its shampoo and conditioner bars have gotten half of our editorial team to kick their bottles out of the shower.  Unlike the “one size fits all” solid shampoos of the past, their line offers concern-specific formulations that help to target things like dryness, grease, flaking, and thinning.

I’ve fallen in love with the “Normal/Oily” shampoo and conditioner bars. What makes them stand out from other solid products that I’ve tried is the fact that they lather (shampoo) and melt (conditioner) easily in my hands when they’re combined with water, which makes them easy to scrub into my scalp and apply to my strands. And instead of making my hair dry, which is what I’ve come to expect whenever I’m washing it with what feels like a bar of soap, they manage to leave it feeling clean, soft, and shiny.

Because the formulations are waterless (which, by the way, earns them another check in the “sustainability” column), the bars are able to deliver more concentrated versions of the ingredients you’d get from your standard liquid products, which tend to be made up of 80 to 90 percent water. They’re also able to bubble up without the use of sulfates, which are used as a lathering agent in other shampoos, so won’t give you the same dehydrating effect that you’d come to expect from your usual foaming favorites.
