Celebrity facialist Joanna Vargas might make skin-care products that stars like Judy Greer and Naomi Watts swear by, but the guru’s best secret for flawless skin is actually, super simple, totally natural, and 100 percent free: water temperature.
The esthetician—who works with familiar faces like Mindy Kaling and Jenna Dewan—has a surprisingly simple daily routine. When it comes to washing her face, in true Goldilocks-fashion, the water can’t be too hot or too cold. “I always wash my face at night, so in the morning I simply rinse my face with tepid water. I don’t like using extreme temperatures on my skin because this tends to dry it out,” she told Byrdie.

Aside from using lukewarm water on her skin for a healthy, moisturized glow, Vargas tends to keep things simple makeup-wise as well. In fact, unless she’s heading to a big event, she only applies some mascara and lip color for her day-to-day look. “I don’t wear much makeup for work—I think it’s nicer to see clean, fresh skin,” she says.

So, Vargas’ expert opinion is that one of the best ways to take care of your skin is to give it room to breathe. And hey, perhaps the main ingredient missing from your routine is just a refreshing splash of slightly warm water first thing in the morning.
This is the ultimate skin-care routine for minimalists (or lazy girls). Or, find out why one derm thinks the future or skin care is about to get techy.
