Once summer rolls around, your collection of sunscreen gets all sorts of impressive. After all, you have to do everything you can to prevent those powerful UV rays from turning you into a red, blistery mess. Unfortunately, a handful of states didn’t quite get the memo this year, according to Google.
While the Golden State and Sunshine State were in the clear—proving that after all these years in beautiful weather, they might just have the whole SPF thing down (*high five*)—Google Trends shows the searches for “sunburn” in June and July were actually the highest in Hawaii and specifically in Honolulu. (Hopefully this doesn’t have to do with the coral reef-saving ban on chemical sunscreen that was passed in May.) Next on the list came Delaware, followed by Maine—where residents were especially concerned with blisters—West Virginia, and North Dakota. As expected, Alaska came in dead last—even though, FYI, it’s certainly possible to damage your skin in the cooler temps, too.

Basically no matter where you are in the US, it just goes to show how important it is to slather on a high SPF and stay out of the rays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. If people right smack dab in the middle of the Midwest—far, far away from those beautiful ocean waves and beach days—are at the top of the sunburn list, you’re not safe from UV rays anywhere. So be sure to slather up all day, every day year-round: Your skin will thank you later.
