My dry skin slurps up moisturizer in the same way I used to gulp Gatorade on Sundays all through college: quickly and with purpose. Over the years, I’ve tested dozens (potentially hundreds?) of products ranging from light lotions to thick creams in an attempt to find something that would quench my thirsty complexion—and none has done it better than Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Hyaluronic Cloud Cream Hydrating Moisturizer ($56).

Peter Thomas Roth Water Drench Hyaluronic Acid Moisturizer — $56.00
At first glance, the moisturizer doesn’t exactly look like it would be ultra-moisturizing, but don’t let the jelly texture fool you. Peter Thomas Roth has managed to pack ample hydrating ingredients into the water-based formula, and my skin is all the more nourished because of it.
Why We Like Peter Thomas Roth’s Water Drench Cloud Cream
First up, there’s hyaluronic acid, which acts as a humectant to draw water beneath the surface of your skin. The Water Drench formula includes three different molecular weights of the ingredient, which penetrate your skin at different levels to keep it hydrated from the inside out. Next, there’s an ingredient called “Pentavatin,” which studies have shown locks in moisture for up to 72 hours after application (yes—even after you cleanse), and five different types of ceramides to keep your skin barrier strong and further prevent transepidermal water loss. Finally, there’s hydrolyzed silk, which leaves skin soft and smooth within seconds after application.
“Think of hyaluronic acid like a sponge: It grabs onto water to pull it into the outer skin layer to pump and hydrate the skin,” says Joshua Zeichner, MD, a board-certified MD, who recommends applying hyaluronic acid-based products to damp skin for best results. “This moisturizer also contains a silk protein that forms a protective barrier over the skin to lock in hydration.”
What I personally love most about Peter Thomas Roth’s Water Drench is the fact that it’s lightweight enough to use during the summer months but also hydrating enough for even the coldest and driest days, which makes it perfect for this transitional time of year when the weather can’t seem to decide what it wants to do. While the $56 price tag isn’t exactly cheap, it does get you a moisturizer that you can use morning and night, 365 days a year, which your skin will guzzle right up.
