When you think about it, taking a razor or sharp object to your most private and sensitive area seems pretty scary. But millions of people turn to hair removal products, specifically for their bikini area. To ensure you don’t end up with cuts, ingrown hairs, burns, or bumps, it’s important to pick the right products to use before, during, and after your shave—which is why we've pulled together the best bikini trimmers.

But first, you’ll need a good shaving cream or gel. “It’s best not to use soap or body wash as most cleansers can be drying,” dermatological nurse and celebrity aesthetician Natalie Aguilar tells Well+Good.

Using a fresh razor is also incredibly important. “Shave with a clean, new razor so that the sharp blade smoothly and evenly glides over the skin while cutting the hair at the skin’s surface,” says Aguilar. “New, sharp blades tend to magically glide with light pressure. Dull blades can pull and stick to the hair, causing an uneven shave and irritation.”

Dull blades can also lead to you shaving the same spot over and over, along with added pressure, which can result in itchiness, nicks and cuts, and razor bumps.

Generally, you should replace your razor blades about every two weeks. “After one use, blades lose their sharpness and begin to accumulate gunk and hair. Whatever doesn’t rinse off can pose a bacterial and fungal threat to freshly shaven areas,” says Aguilar. “It’s recommended that one should replace their razor/blades every five to eight shaves or every two weeks, whichever comes first. I also recommend cleansing the razor or blade with Hibiclens (the best antimicrobial soap ever) and hot water.”

A shaving routine is important, says Aguilar. “A hydrating post shave lotion, balm, or gel moisturizer should be applied when you finish,” says Aguilar. “These soothe the skin and often contain ingredients that prevent ingrowns and further irritation. Some of the best post-shave ingredients to look for are aloe vera, chamomile, arnica, salicylic acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid, coconut oil, and tamanu oil.”

The built-in Olay moisturizer comes out through the blades, and ensures a smooth, soft shave with every use. “The best way to shave is to prep skin,” says Aguilar. “First, soften the skin with warm water, not too hot or too cold.
