Best stationary bikes

And Just Like That drama aside, it’s hard to deny the appeal of the Peloton bike. You get a great cardio workout with energetic instructors from studios around the world, an engaged community, a leaderboard to help motivate and challenge you (for anyone who loves some healthy competition), metrics to see your performance over time, and fun workouts such as the Artist Series featuring collaborations with iconic musicians like Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Lizzo, and Prince. And on days you don’t feel like a spin class, you can choose between a ton of other classes on the app, including boxing, yoga, outdoor, stretching, and more.

Peloton also has a Bike+ with a bigger, rotating screen as well as an auto-resistance option.

SoulCycle At Home Bike — $1,900.00

If you’re more into riding to the beat than riding to beat someone, the SoulCycle at-home bike replicates the dance-worthy classes you took in the studio. At the end of a SoulCycle ride, you get to see your Beat Match, which measures how in sync you were with the rhythm of the music. You’ll get your other metrics in power, distance, and cadence, too, but it’s especially satisfying to see how on (or off) tempo your pedal strokes were.

And because that SoulCycle is part of Equinox, you can access a broader library of boutique fitness classes including Pure Yoga, Headstrong (guided meditations,) Rumble boxing, Precision Run, and more.

The MYX II — $1,399.00

Lesser known than Peloton or SoulCycle, the MYX II bike still makes for a great (and slightly more affordable) addition to your home gym. It also has a large, touchscreen display, thousands of workouts, and the ability to track your progress. It includes a heart rate monitor (and is compatible with Apple Watch) to help maximize your workouts by giving you individual heart rate zones to target. And, if you don’t want to buy spin shoes, you don’t need to—the MYX II bike’s pedals have SPD clips on one side and cages on the other, so you can wear any pair of sneakers you already have at home.

Best smart treadmills

NordicTrack Commercial 2950 Treadmill — $2,500.00

Running on a treadmill can be tedious, but this NordicTrack treadmill has a 22-inch HD touchscreen, improved WiFi, and comes with a free 30-day iFit membership to let you access live workouts with trainers (who you can text for tips in real-time) running all over the world. During workouts, trainers can use AutoAdjust to change up your speed, incline (up to 15 percent), and decline (down to -3 percent). Once you’re finished with your run, you can also do yoga, mindfulness, or strength classes to round out your fitness routine.

Best smart mirrors

Tempo Studio — $1,995.00

Tempo Studio is like having a personal trainer for your strength workouts. The easel-like machine has a 42-inch screen that uses a 3D sensor to track your movements to help correct your form, track your progress, and recommend weights and target reps in real-time.

There are a variety of workouts depending on if you want strength, cardio, yoga, or more (membership required). The starter package includes a workout mat, two 7.5 lb dumbbells, four collars, and 75 lbs of weight plates. You can also upgrade to the Plus or Pro, which include more equipment, like a heart rate monitor and folding bench.

Tempo also has a scaled-down, more affordable version called the Move, which uses your own TV and iPhone’s camera, along with a device called the Tempo Core to provide similar 3D scanning and feedback as you work out. It also includes a storage cabinet with dumbbells and smart weight plates.

Tonal — $2,995.00

Tonal is for anyone who prefers their strength training to be digital (or for anyone who doesn’t have room for a ton of free weights lying around). Instead of physical weights, Tonal has dynamic weights that use AI to adapt to your strength level, which can deliver up to 200 pounds of resistance using a minimal amount of space. Mounted on the wall, Tonal is about the size of a flat-screen TV and has a large touchscreen display.

The built-in sensors can provide guidance on form and position, and a digital spotter will resist resistance if it senses you struggling. You can do both upper and lower body workouts with the machine, and there are additional accessories like smart handles and a smart bar to mix up your sweat sessions.

Mirror — $1,195.00

Mirror, mirror, on the wall—you’ll be the fittest of them all. The MIRROR, owned by lululemon, when turned off, can be used as a regular mirror, and when turned on becomes a smart gym. There are 10,000-plus classes on-demand you can choose from in the app (boot camp, dance cardio, barre, meditation, and total body strength, to name a few), as well as daily live classes, and one-on-one training sessions for an extra fee.

When paired with a heart rate monitor or smart watch, you can also see your stats on the screen as you work out and track your progress over time. MIRROR also uses fully-integrated smart weights (bought separately or as part of a package) that track reps and form.

Best rowing machines

Ergatta Rower — $2,199.00

If workout classes aren’t your thing, Ergatta has found a way to make exercising seem more like a game. You can do interval workouts with unique challenges, race against other community members for some friendly competition or against yourself to break previous records, or do themed push programs that follow certain sequences (membership required). Bonus: rowing is a full-body exercise, so you’re getting some good bang for your buck every time you get on the machine.

As you hit certain milestones and community goals, you can unlock new programs, enable charitable donations, and more. The machine takes in real-time feedback to adjust to your fitness ability, and as you improve over time, your workouts and targets get more difficult so you’re always improving. New games and integrations are constantly launched, and you can store the rower upright when not in use, though it’s attractive enough to leave out in plain sight, too.

Hydrow — $2,295.00

This futuristic rower uses a patented drag mechanism that’s computer-controlled to make it feel like you’re actually on the water, and workouts are led by athletes on real waterways. You can do live or on-demand sessions, or opt for an unguided row through a scenic location around the world. With a big 22-inch HD touchscreen display and front speakers, you’ll be immersed in the rowing experience, with no water required. There’s also a library of off-rower workouts you can access via the app, including yoga, Pilates, and strength training (membership required).

The machine is quiet and can be tilted upright for storage if you need to free up some space. Hydrow was recently picked as one of Oprah’s Favorite Things 2021, so if that’s not a good endorsement of the product, we don’t know what is.

Best boxing equipment

FightCamp — $999.00

We all have those stressful days where we need to let out some excess energy, and while it isn’t exactly socially acceptable to hit something, punching a boxing bag is a different story. FightCamp brings the boxing gym home to you. You’ll get a free-standing bag, gloves, wraps, and punch trackers (they fit inside the wraps) that measure your punch count in real-time so you can see your progress across workouts and where you rank on the leaderboard.

The workouts are led by former competitive fighters, and like a boxing match, they’re set up in three-minute rounds with one-minute rest periods in-between. For those more chill days, you can also find workouts for stretching, bodyweight strength training, and recovery.

For a low-impact workout that’s a core-burner, look no further than Pilates. Frame’s smart reformer lets you enjoy all the benefits of a Pilates workout without going to the studio. The reformer has a big, swivel touchscreen where you can display live and on-demand classes ranging from classic to high-intensity to pre-natal stretching. It’s lightweight and on wheels, and the machine (available in black or white) can fit under most beds when folded.
