‘I’m a Podiatrist, and These Are the Sandals You Should Wear if You Plan To Be on Your Feet All Day’
When it comes to footwear for standing on hours on end, chances are sandals don't come to mind. Between the lack of arch support, open, flexible design, and minimal cushioning, sandals are better left for, say, a quick trip to the beach or a brisk stroll around the block... right?
Not necessarily. Turns out, there are sandals you can wear that are supportive enough for long-lasting comfort. To find them, you just need to be a discerning shopper.
Think about it: Your feet are these small-but-mighty powerhouses that have to hold up your entire body weight. Those cheap rubber flip flops you found at the bottom of your beach bag ain't gonna cut it on long strolls and arduous hikes. "Standing is very hard on the feet and body," says Emily Splichal, DPM, a functional podiatrist and CEO of orthotic and footwear company, Naboso. "We were designed to move, so I consider prolonged standing just as stressful to the body as prolonged sitting. Movement is what keeps our feet, muscles, and tissue hydrated and continuously shifting stress."
- Emily Splichal, DPM, board-certified podiatrist and human movement specialist, and global leader in barefoot science and rehabilitation at the Center for Functional and Regenerative Podiatric Medicine
This doesn't mean you need to strap yourself into an unbreathable pair of boots or heavy, clunky sneakers. But it also doesn't mean you should expect your flat-as-a-board pool slides to do the trick, either. "Someone who is on their feet a lot will need the same arch support as someone with flat feet," Dr. Splichal explains. "Sandals with arch support can be used to allow the foot muscles to take a break and relax while in the arch support sandals."
Buckles, straps, and toe-loops should be considered, too. The more adjustable, the better, especially if you can't fit into standard medium shoe sizes. "Look for adjustable tops and straps that are designed to accommodate bunions and wide forefeet," says Dr. Splichal.

And of course, don't be afraid to accessorize. Depending on the sandal, Dr. Splichal recommends using insoles, like the Naboso Activation Sensory Insole ($55), or sensory socks to reduce foot fatigue and joint paint. Combined, these can make a significant improvement on your posture, balance, and overall feel.
So, yes, you can wear sandals for long periods of time—just do it one of the picks below.
