Whether you sport leisure ware for travel, errands, or laying around the house, coordinated separates are a fail-safe way to feel more put together. And this season the look is going beyond matching tops and leggings to include sweat sets. Early adopters of the look include It girls like Bella Hadid, Selena Gomez, and Kendall Jenner.
“Matching sweat suit sets are back and we have Kanye West to thank,” says stylist and brand consultant Rachael Wang, referring to the rapper prior to his recent (of many) incendiary remarks when he was focused more on fashion than his Twitter feed.
“Everyone from Rhianna to Celine Dion is wearing matching sweat suit sets.”
“Back in the fall of 2015 when Yeezy dropped a line of desaturated sweatpants and hoodies, fashion critics were skeptical. Two years later, everyone from Rhianna to Celine Dion is wearing matching sweat suit sets. And thanks to Vetements’ collaboration with Juicy Couture, we have officially entered a new era of early ’00s worship.”
Shopbop’s fashion director Caroline Maguire says this look “really stems from the streetwear sweat suit—it looks comfy and chic without being sloppy.” For those drawn to nostalgia, beloved ’90s labels like Fila, Nike, and Champion have a range of sporty silhouettes freshly rebooted for 2018, while contemporary and fashion-forward active brands from Vince to P.E Nation are putting out modern versions from feminine to athletic.
Maguire is a proponent of the sweat suit for on-the-go occasions for easy-chic styling. “I like to wear this look on the weekends or when traveling with a track jacket.”
The 14 sweat sets below comprise some of spring’s coolest offerings, ranging from cropped hoodie-and-shorts sets to jogger suits to a sweatshirt-and-skirt combo (which is incredible).
