Jaws aside, the beach is a pretty perfect summer destination: You can soak up the sun (responsibly, of course), get those perfect tousled waves sans bottle, or enjoy a healthy meal during a beautiful sunset picnic.
But what doesn’t often make the list of reasons to hit the sand is to get in a workout.
Which is too bad because, according to the trainers behind Tone It Up, the beach is the perfect place to squeeze in a fun—and way effective—sweat sesh.
“Running by the water can be so meditative and calming for whenever we feel stressed,” says Karena Dawn, one-half of the Insta-fit duo. “You can even skip the headphones and let the ocean waves be your music.” (Sorry, Spotify.)
If that’s not enough to get you pulling up directions to the nearest ocean, how about the fact that it is a serious fitness booster? “Running in the sand is such an incredible workout,” Katrina Scott explains. “The soft sand, even down by the water, adds in a little extra resistance and toughness.”
The best part is you can get up and run at any time, no sneakers required—and cool off in the water whenever things get a little too tough.
So, what are you waiting for? Hit the sand—and document it by sharing on Instagram using #iamwellandgood!
