Dairy alternatives have come a long way since I was a kid, when a lactose-intolerant person’s best bet for a bowl of cereal was Lactaid (which is still dairy, just without lactose, BTW). Now, skipping dairy completely is both plausible and popular, with almond milk at Starbucks (AKA, everywhere), and alt yogurt getting more and more time in the spotlight.
The shift from real dairy to nut- and plant-based alternatives has been so noteworthy that Elmhurst Milked, a traditional dairy company that has been around since 1925, overhauled its production last year to focus exclusively on nondairy alternatives. And now, its products are set to roll out into hundreds of Walmarts, Wegmans, and Whole Foods nationwide.
Elmhurst has four core options: traditional (and potentially unsustainable) almond milk, milked cashews, milked walnuts, and milked hazelnuts. The brand also just launched unsweetened versions of its almond and hazelnut milk as well as four new varieties: milked oats, milked brown rice, and the country’s first peanut milk, which comes in a chocolate version, too. Aside from the brand’s genius innovation acumen, Elmhurst products are also free of GMOs, gluten free, vegan, and made using only whole, raw ingredients sourced from trusted farmers. Sound delicious? Well, now you can find all the milks at 39 Whole Foods and at more than 300 Walmart locations across the country; starting in March, the four core options will be available at all Wegmans.
And if you can’t make it to your local grocer, just order from the company’s website or Amazon—which you can do easily since the milks don’t need refrigeration.
