The mood-boosting reason Aubrey Plaza ditched social media

It’s safe to assume that if April Ludgate had an Instagram account, the beloved Parks and Recreation character’s feed would be filled with sarcastic memes (probably directed at coworker Jerry Gergich) and loads of #tongueouttuesday dog photos of three-legged Champion (or the occasional Li’l Sebastian #TBT).

But April’s real-life counterpart—the equally whip-smart, sarcastic, and dryly charming Aubrey Plaza, whose latest film The Little Hours is out now—says her relationship with social media is tricky.

“Sometimes it makes me hate myself. I don’t really know how to handle it.”

“I don’t have an Instagram obsession like a person that I’m obsessing about, but I do relate to the idea of getting kind of wrapped up in looking at other people’s stuff and feeling bad about yourself,” the 33-year-old actress says in an interview with The AV Club.

Plaza also says she’s had to take breaks from social media in the name of sanity. “I was on Twitter and then I got off it and then I’m back on it,” she says. “I have a very complicated relationship with the social media. I don’t really like to do it, but sometimes, you know, it’s kind of fun, and it’s a way to connect with people. But sometimes it makes me hate myself. I don’t really know how to handle it.”

So why’d she quit? “I think it was right around the election and it was right at the New Year, and I was just like, I don’t know, maybe I just don’t need to spend my energy there.” (But she willingly admits that when she books and is ready to promote a project, she’s happily back online. “Once I got some movies, I’m like, back on, baby,” she says.) Hey Aubrey, if you’re doing the digital thing right now, may we suggest some almost-as-cute-as-Champion Insta-dog awesomeness? Because: balance.
