A year ago, Solange released her third studio album, A Seat at the Table, which propelled her to Beyoncé levels of fame and adoration. The record landed on many a best-of-2016 playlist and gave us “Cranes in the Sky”—not to mention all the accompanying Grammy-winning art and video work.

But it’s not just the singer’s bold style that’s held fans’ attention (the entire wedding party can and should be able to wear white, you guys): Unsurprisingly, Solange is every bit as inspirational and empowering as her big sis (there must be something in the water at the Knowles household). The artist’s apparent side hustle has been her role as an outspoken activist and feminist figure. Her views include pieces of wisdom all #bossbabes could stand to embrace.

1. Don’t compromise yourself or your vision.

Speaking to Refinery29, Solange said, “It would be so much easier for me to put on a little black dress, straighten my hair, and sing about dancing in the club, but it’s not my job to prove anything.”

2. Follow your instincts, and success will follow.

When Beyoncé chatted with her sis for Interview, Solange shared that she had a strong intuition, even as a child. “I remember being really young and having this voice inside that told me to trust my gut. And my gut has been really, really strong in my life. It’s pretty vocal and it leads me,” she said.

3. Stick up for what you believe in.

The #bosslady told Bust, “I am a proud black feminist and womanist and I’m extremely proud of the work that’s being done. I’m a feminist who wants not only to hear the term intersectionality, but actually feel it, and see the evolution of what intersectional feminism can actually achieve. I want women’s rights to be equally honored, and uplifted, and heard.”
