What you need to know about autonomic disorder, the condition Solange is dealing with

Solange Knowles has had a blockbuster year—after releasing her critically acclaimed album, A Seat at the Table, the ever-inspiring artist has done everything from tour extensively and direct (other people’s) music videos to curate Calvin Klein ads. Each of these accomplishments are impressive in their own right, but even more so in light of Solange’s recent Instagram post revealing that she has been battling an autonomic disorder for the last five months.

The singer, who was slated to perform on New Year’s Eve at the Afropunk festival in South Africa shared news of her show cancellation writing, “The past five months I have been quietly treating, and working through an Autonomic Disorder. It been a journey that hasn’t been easy on me.” She added that she’s learning a lot about herself in light of the complicated diagnosis, “but right now, my doctors are not clearing me for such an extended lengthy flight, and doing a rigorous show right after.”

Although Solange did not disclose what exact type of autonomic disorder she’s battling, according to NYU Lagone, the condition is inclusive of a cluster of disorders involving the autonomic nervous system, which “regulates the function of the body’s internal organs, such as heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, and body temperature.” A person with one of these disorders may “have trouble regulating one or more of these systems, which can result in fainting, lightheadedness, fluctuating blood pressure, and other symptoms.”

Solange shared that although she’s been encouraging self care this last year, she hasn’t given herself the attention she deserves. “It needs to start with myself, and I’m looking forward to doing a better job of this 2018,” she wrote on Instagram. Hopefully some expert TLC can help lead the multi-talented artist toward a healthy recovery.
