Think about what brings you joy: If you’re like Marie Kondo, it might be a super-tidy and minimalist living space, or maybe it’s planning dreamy getaways—no judgment if it’s simply the perfect piece of avocado toast. Well, for comedian and author Tiffany Haddish, a big serving of homegrown greens is what brings a big smile to her face without fail.
When the Girls Trip star started talking about good ole vegetables during a recent appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she started to get really jazzed. Haddish said when she hosted Saturday Night Live (and totally *slayed*), musical guest Taylor Swift approached her about setting up a dinner date, and the actress asked the musician to make barbecue chicken, potato salad, and brisket.
Haddish offered to bring her own veggies: “I said, ‘I’m gonna bring some collard greens, ’cause I got my own garden and I got greens,'” she told DeGeneres.
“I smile when I pick the greens, and when I wash the greens I smile. Then when I cut them up, I smile. And then when I cook them, I smile. They call it joyful greens.” —Tiffany Haddish
And, turns out, Haddish doesn’t just garden—she joyfully gardens. “When I pick my greens, I smile,” Haddish told DeGeneres. “I smile when I pick the greens, and when I wash the greens I smile. Then when I cut them up, I smile. And then when I cook them, I smile. They call it joyful greens.” Apparently, her must-be-massive garden includes kale, strawberries, eggplants, cucumbers, an avocado tree, beets, greens, and potatoes—i.e., the stuff of colorful-salad magic.
And the greens went smashingly at the dinner party: Haddish said Swift prepared a smorgasbord of tasty food including chicken and corn bread, but the Grammy winner was won over by the joyful greens. “She was like, ‘Oh, my God, Tiffany, I have been wanting greens for so long. I go to all these different places and get greens and they’re never good. These greens are so delicious.'”
Haddish’s response: “Girl, ’cause them is joyful greens.'” And Tiffany, if you’re reading this—you are, right?—here are a few more greens that might bring you joy and also help keep your mental health in check.
