7 Ways to Rock Fishnets—Yes, Fishnets—With Your Athleisure Looks This Fall
Fishnets, once accessible to only a niche sartorial sensibility, have slowly made their way into the mainstream. Everyone from Jill Stuart to Jeremy Scott showed them in some iteration on runways this past New York Fashion Week. Trend-setting Olympic high jumper Vashti Cunningham pulled on a pair under sweatpants for a recent Nike campaign. And street-style stars continue to peekaboo stockings beneath ripped jeans on Instagram.
In other words, "fishnet is a major highlight in 2017 fashion," says celeb stylist Alyssa Sutter, who dresses Pretty Little Liars star Lucy Hale. And it just so happens to go really well with another big, of-the-moment style movement: athleisure. "I’m not surprised the two together have become a mega-trend for fall," she says.
Altheisure is inherently casual, so it's actually easier, in some sense, to pair fishnets with your fitness apparel than it is to style them straight into your street clothes.
But how *exactly* do you wear fishnets with your sneakers, leggings, and sweats in a way that looks cool and not contrived? "It's not as scary as it may seem," swears Sutter. The main thing to keep in mind is that less is more. Luckily, altheisure is inherently casual, so it's actually easier, in some sense, to pair fishnets with your fitness apparel than it is to style them straight into your street clothes.
Below, celeb stylist Alyssa Sutter shares her 7 genius tips for wearing fishnets with your sporty wardrobe staples this fall.
1. Try layering stockings under your leggings
This will give your typical workout look a more elevated and fashion-forward feel. Adding fishnets to your athletic wear is perfect way to spice up your Pilates uniform.
2. Pair them with distressed or cuffed denim for a peek-a-boo effect
Fishnets under denim is probably the easiest way to wear this trend. The best way to pull it off is not to overthink it. Throw on a basic tee, cuff your jeans, and you're good to go.

3. Opt for a larger pattern for more of a statement
That way, your stockings become the conversation piece of your outfit.
4. For a subtle approach, try socks instead of stockings
Fishnet socks are a nice alternative if you find the stockings too uncomfortable to wear. Plus, it's also a good way to ease into this trend.
5. Wear minimalist sneakers for a more balanced look
This is my personal favorite. I love the look of a clean white sneaker contrasted with black stockings.
6. Show off the waistband with a cropped tee or sweater
The thick waistband of the tights is the most flattering part! It instantly cinches in your waist and gives your body more shape.
7. Try a monochromatic look by opting for a colored pair to match another dominate hue in your outfit
It might seem overwhelming but depending on the color, it can actually feel more subtle. A monochromatic look in nude or even white can look more purposeful and not so forced.
