Ikea Might Open Its First Hotel—in a Connecticut-Set Architectural Jewel
Still, if you've ever considered just passing out in one of Ikea's soothing bedroom displays rather than transporting the set to your home, good news: The company is reportedly in talks about opening its first hotel, where you could luxuriate in the well-designed rooms without needing to assemble a thing.
Since 2003, Ikea has owned a building in New Haven, Connecticut, known as the Pirelli Building, which has remained largely unoccupied and unused, according to Architectural Digest. This could be changing shortly, as Ikea may just transform the building into the minimalist hotel of your interior design dreams, as New Haven's economic development administrator Matthew Nemerson told New Haven Independent—although a deal hasn't been confirmed, and Ikea is silent on the details.
The Pirelli Building is in the same lot as an Ikea store, meaning that if the hotel opens, you might be able to shop the designs you loved in your hotel room.
The concrete structure was built in 1969 by architect Marcel Breuer—yes, the same man who designed New York City's Met Breuer museum—in the style of Brutalist architecture, which is experiencing something of a renaissance as of late.

The prospect of an Ikea hotel is exciting—especially since the Pirelli Building is in the same lot as an Ikea store, meaning that if the hotel opens, you might be able to shop the designs you loved in your hotel room (and maybe use room service to order bug burgers).
Until the hotel opens, get your Ikea fix by purchasing pet-friendly designs, and then have TaskRabbit assemble it.
