It’s midnight. You’re exhausted. But you just can’t fall asleep. So you cue up a movie to soothe yourself. And because maybe there’s a chance you’ll end up seeing Ryan Gosling in your dreams, you opt for the colorful, splashy, song-and-dance blockbuster La La Land. But now it’s 2:30 a.m. and not only are you still awake, but you’re also Googling flights to Los Angeles (maybe even contemplating an acting career).
Turns out your plan had one subtle—yet major—flaw: Next time, you should watch Baa Baa Land instead. Yes, this is a real thing—or at least it will be when it’s released in September. (And no, neither Gosling nor Emma Stone are affiliated with the project.) It’s an eight-hour, slow-motion film without any dialogue, actors, or show-stopping dance scenes—literally just sheep standing in a field. Alex Tew and Michael Acton Smith produced the feature (they’re also the co-founders of the meditation app Calm), and fondly refer to it as the “dullest movie” ever made…because that was their goal.
“It’s better than any sleeping pill—the ultimate insomnia cure.”
While you’re welcome to stay awake for its entirety, watching Baa Baa Land’s intended to be a form of meditation—not entertainment—according to its creators. “It’s better than any sleeping pill—the ultimate insomnia cure,” says Tew. To which Smith adds: “Nothing happens…for eight hours.”
The film’s cast numbers in the hundreds—all sheep. And its producers encourage you to “count them if you can, but don’t stress if you can’t.” (None of the animals were harmed in the making of the movie, which was shot in the United Kingdom.)
Can’t wait for Baa Baa Land to be released this fall? Enjoy this very exciting (and LOL-inducing) teaser until then.
If counting sheep won’t do the trick, try giving you bed a summer makeover. Or squeeze in a workout that’s actually designed to improve the quality of your zzz’s.
