While predicting trends is tricky business, an easier way to spot a pattern is retroactively. I, for example, have been some doing end-of-year synthesizing of top Well+Good articles this year and have found some patterns (to start, people are really obsessed with apple cider vinegar and leggings). Well, Barnes & Noble just rolled out its year-in-review revelations, and several are especially promising for the year ahead.
The bookstore chain reported (to no surprise for those keeping up with Merriam-Webster) half of the best-selling fiction books were penned by #bossbabes who “wrote empowering novels about brave women.” So, The Handmaid’s Tale and To Kill A Mockingbird obviously made the cut.
Barnes & Noble reported that this year, “mindfulness has a been a growing and developing trend. Highlighting the importance of introspection, presence and self-reflection, half of the top 10 nonfiction books focused on this trend.”
Regarding nonfiction, the top 10 best-selling books were filled with wellness-related must-haves. According to B&N, “Mindfulness has a been a growing and developing trend. Highlighting the importance of introspection, presence and self-reflection, half of the top 10 nonfiction books focused on this trend.” The best-selling nonfiction books of the year include titles like You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life, Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life…And Maybe the World, What Happened.
Furthermore, the best-selling books in both the fiction and nonfiction sectors were mindfulness-related: Milk and Honey and The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck, respectively.
So, if you burned through the pages of Well+Good staffers’ favorite books, consider cracking open a tome promoting feminism and mindfulness, two healthy trends that will hopefully take us all the way to 2019.
