Elle Macpherson’s advice for a healthy, happy home

Supermodel Elle Macpherson is often jetting off from one glam locale to the next, but for her, there’s truly no place like home. It’s her sanctuary, her family’s HQ, and her happy place. Creating her healthy home involves good tunes, nutritious meals, and a little “me time” to boot. Here, the Well+Good Council member shares a glimpse into how she likes to live.

I love being at home in Miami. The heat, beach, and lifestyle remind me so much of my native Australia.

I believe true beauty radiates from the inside out, whether it has to do with health or interior design. I have always had an interest in interiors. My home is full of modern art and furniture from the 1930s, ’40s, and ’50s. It’s mid-century style with a Miami twist. For me, color is important, as are clean lines with dash of eccentricity. So my home is very much a juxtaposition of mid-century modern, seagrass matting, Miami styling, and indigenous art. My love of the outdoors means I am always swinging open the windows and the doors to let the clean air and sunshine flow through the house.

I enjoy cleaning, believe it or not—I find it very therapeutic. I love gardening, too, and right now I am obsessed with crafting a vegetable patch. It’s my new thing, probably because I am also learning to cook healthy vegan dishes. For me, plant-based whole food nutrients are key for good health.

Our healthy home is filled with music. We have music going from the time we wake up until we go to bed. Our choices range from Beethoven, Mozart, and Bach to jazz, country and western, the 1970s, and a good dose of Drake! Whatever we’re listening to, it sets the tone for our collective mood.

While the teenagers do their thing on weekends, I carve out some relaxation time.

From Friday night through to Sunday, my house teems with teens. On Saturday mornings, the kitchen is a busy and productive mess, thanks to a boys’ breakfast cook-up that usually consists of pancakes, cereal, bacon, eggs, and always a Super Kids Nourishing Plant Protein Chocolate smoothie. I love to see what smoothie combinations they come up with! It’s great to see them being creative to be healthy. Seeing them laugh and enjoy themselves makes me feel so happy.

While the teenagers do their thing on weekends, I carve out some relaxation time. One of my favorite ways to unwind is to curl up with my labradoodles and a pile of books. I gravitate toward non-fiction and inspirational reads—if it’s informative, whether it’s about home décor or a human journey, I’m interested. Being at home with my family is more than just being at home. It’s very much my haven.
