Malibu, California might be known for its great waves and sun-soaked sandy beaches. But the nearby mountains, canyon, and desert rocks, the abundant wildlife, and of course, food scene, all contribute to making this SoCal town the healthy hotspot that it is. To truly experience all the wellness gems this beachside community has to offer, however, your best bet is to ask a local, like Mel Nahas, the founder of Conscious City Guide.
“Living here continues to inspire the energetic interchange of how we can live beyond just existence and participate in a life in kinship,” says Nahas.
Here, Nahas shares her insider intel on how to take in all of Malibu’s magical healthy vibes next time you’re in this coastal SoCal town.
Mindful things to do and see…
One Gun Ranch: A dreamy, local biodynamic farm that grows and supplies energetically aligned produce to Malibu’s local restaurants.
Tuna Canyon: Nahas says this is a gorgeous place for an amazing hike. There are many trails to take with views of both the city and the ocean.
Mercado Sagrado: This annual fair in Malibu Canyon (2018 dates TBD), is curated by Heather Culp and Carly Jo Morgan and combines an artisanal market comprised of goods from local makers, with food, music, talks, and workshops all centered around SoCal culture.
Haus Of Sages: Chris and Mikki Sage generously share their knowledge and wisdom about the daily ritual of drinking tea at their home that’s also devoted to Ayurveda, textiles, ceramics, and more.
For something delicious to eat…
SunLife: “They have somehow perfected the alchemy of the best smoothies,” says Nahas. “I also love their Hawaii Bowl made with acai, gluten-free granola topped with strawberries, banana, and coconut shreds. I love it for breakfast, lunch, or dessert.”
The Surfrider Hotel: This new boutique hotel is run by the “coolest couple,” says Nahas and in addition to being a great little place to stay, the food is top notch. “So much thought has been put into their menu. [The food] is always locally sourced and packed with veggies from One Gun Ranch’s biodynamic farm just up the mountain.”
Topanga Living Cafe: This vibrant spot is a local favorite. “I absolutely love the corn fritters,” Nahas says.
Pacific Coast Greens: This little market on the Pacific Coast Highway stocks local produce and foods and is “where you’ll find the most magical hummus called ‘Majestic Sprouted Hummus,l” says Nahas.
Farmer’s Markets: The roots of the home-grown food movement run deep in Malibu. If you’re planning to stay for a while, head to either One Gun Ranch at the Malibu Pier or Cross Creek on Sundays to stock up on fresh produce.
Beaches, beaches…
Leo Carillo: Nahas says this is a great beach if you have dogs in tow.
The Colony: This beach features an unbeatable long stretch of white sand, but Nahas says to check the tides before you head there. “It can be hard to access or not accessible at all if the tide is high!” she warns.
Lechuza: This is a hidden gem of a beach and one to hit up for some privacy. “My friend recently shared this beach with me—I cant believe I’m sharing it,” Nahas says.
Little Dume and Paradise Cove: These beaches are perfect for family fun.
