Montauk’s Surf Lodge gets a healthy makeover

The famous Montauk Surf Lodge—known for its late-night cocktails, club-going crowds, and camera-worthy socialites—just went on the hospitality equivalent of a juice cleanse.

While nightlife won’t totally disappear, the Lodge’s new owners decided to turn over a healthy new leaf for the Hamptons hotspot (which presumably has something to do with reported complaints from hotel guests and town residents about the out-of-control noise levels lasting into wee hours of the morning).

Now, the boutique hotel will capitalize on turning its gorgeous piece of waterfront property into a daytime oasis, with amenities you might find at a fitness spa.

Owner Jayma Cardoso calls it a “new era” for The Surf Lodge. “With the new ownership and partners, our goal is to refine the guest experience by respecting the town’s values and bringing it back to its roots.” Maybe now it’ll draw a chic wellness crowd looking for a sanctuary, kind of like the Standard Spa in Miami set out to do.

So what exactly will The Surf Lodge look like post-detox? Here are some of the healthiest highlights:

Fitness. Beginning in late June, Amanda Freeman’s SLT Yoga will host outdoor classes on the hotel deck at 8:30, 9:30, and 10:30 a.m., Friday through Sunday. Since they won’t have any Megaformers on hand, they’ve also created special SLT “Box” and “Shred” workout classes, with star instructors like Erin Jacques and Natalie Uhling. Classes will be $30, or $20 for hotel guests.

Healthy Food. Sam Talbot decamped for the Caribbean earlier this year, so the Surf Lodge brought in Aussie Chef Chris Rendell, from Highlands Restaurant Group, to open a new restaurant, called Byron. While Highlands’ West Village spot is not exactly healthy, Byron’s cuisine will take a cue from the Australian surf town, with a “clean, fresh, local, and organic market-driven menu that focuses on daily caught seafood.” Plus, they’ll also have…

Juice. Hamptons fave, The Juicy Naam, will transport its fresh juices over from its East Hampton location in mason jars. (Cute!) They’ll be sold on the breakfast and brunch menu at Byron, and as a cleanse.

Going green. The Surf Lodge installed a water filtration system and initiated a recycling program, but you’ll especially benefit from its shift to an organic cleaning service company and more natural personal-care products—like Coola organic sunscreen and Davines after-sun haircare—if you stay the night.

Boho chic accommodations. Artist/surfer Alexandra Cassaniti was tapped to act as Creative Curator for the Surf Lodge, and she picked design elements inspired by Montauk’s “surf culture and gypsy style,” from the white-washed walls and sun-bleached pine floors to a signature sea-evoking scent.—Lisa Elaine Held
