If you’ve already burnt through your scented candles right now, it makes sense. These little light beacons help us lift our spirits through their aromatherapeutic benefits, or they make us feel sexy when we feel anything but (they don’t call it mood lighting for nothing). And now all you have is a graveyard of glass jars that you don’t know what to do with. From Diptyque to Dollar Tree and everything in between, your wax has made like Lil’ Jon and gotten low. Well, luckily we have an eco-friendly DIY candle-making kit to light your fire… like, literally.
We’re super into this candle-making kit by Siblings right now. Each kit comes in a plant-based bag, and coconut oil based wax, and helps to solve the problem of perpetually accumulating candle jars. Candle jars are one of those weird things that we don’t quite known if we should recycle; and since glass can take up to a million years to decompose in a landfill, the least we can do is try to repurpose them.
If this project sounds intimating, don’t worry. We’re not talking about expert level candle crafting like you’re in Colonial times. The only prep you need beforehand is a vessel, be it something in your candle backlog or a cute tea cup or mug you’re never going to use.
Remove the wick holder, wick, and matches, and then heat in the microwave it for three minutes. You thread the wick through the wick holder, put it on top of your vessel, and pour the melted wax in the vessel. After you wait two hours, your wax should be good to go! Basically if you can make some Easy Mac, you can probably make a candle (but do be a little more careful with the hot wax).
Every bag retails for $22, and quite honestly the combos all sound amazing. At the top of my love list is Scent No. 08, with notes of peony, bergamot, honeysuckle, and amber—very playful with a blend of floral and citrus. Scent No. 05 sounds like coziness and tranquility all at once; it’s a warm mix of clove, vanilla, cedarwood thyme, and soothing lavender. A choice pick if you want to feels snuggled, and dial your stress levels down from their constant highs. For something fresh and summery, Scent No. 03 contains a top note of cucumber underscored by freesia, jasmine, fresh greens, lily, and melon. And selfishly, I can’t reject anything with gardenia and lemon, so some Scent No. 02 sounds like a heaven in a jar as well.
Ultimately, it happily gives you something to do when, let’s face it, you might be in the isolation vortex and desperate to find something new to do at home. Beyond that, it’s simple, sustainable living. Right now feels like a tall order to mitigate waste when you’re just trying to keep your chin up. But this is fun and manageable way to keep the light on when everything else feels pretty dim… and finally put to use the glass jars from candles past.
