Refrigerator Look Book: Josie Maran

And the model, actress, and beauty entrepreneur doesn’t just sell better-for-you beauty. She’s a living example of the connection between health and glowing gorgeousness.

We peeked inside her fridge to see how her healthy food-begets-beauty philosophy plays out on her grocery shopping list and her dinner table…

You have tons of fruits and veggies. Are they the core of your diet? Definitely, I like to go to the Hollywood Farmer’s Market when I’m in LA or the local farmer’s market when I’m in Pennsylvania for QVC. This week our veggies are from Trader Joe’s. Sometimes I can’t do it all!

I don’t see any meat. Are you a vegetarian, or is it hiding in your freezer? I’m not a vegetarian, but I do try to limit the amount of meat that I eat. When I do eat meat, I buy organic to ensure that my family isn’t consuming added chemicals.

What’s in the water bottle behind the coconut water? A smoothie? Yes! That’s a fruit and veggie smoothie I make to have as a snack. It has berries and beets in it.

Sounds delish. You just welcomed your second child this summer (thanks for sending us that adorable family photo). Would your fridge have looked a lot different while you were pregnant? No, but my freezer definitely did. I ate chocolate ice cream like it was going out of style. It’s funny, because I usually don’t like sweets, but I couldn’t get enough!

Ha! Do you cook a lot? Walk me through what a typical family dinner looks like. Yes, I cook all the time. It relaxes me. I love to cook Persian food for my family. My husband is Persian so it reminds him of his family and ties my daughters to their heritage. There are so many wonderful Persian stews that we all love. One of my faves is called ghormeh sabzi. I make it with tadig (Persian crispy rice) and serve it with a yogurt sauce that has shallots and lots of organic herbs like tarragon, mint, and lemon basil.

Speaking of your daughters, has it been hard instilling healthy habits in Rumi Joon, or does she tend to follow your example? Amazingly, she loves her fruits and veggies. Her favorites are broccoli, steamed spinach, arugula, avocados, coconuts, seaweed, and edamame. She eats very well without any coaxing.

Wow! As a model and beauty entrepreneur, do you find that your diet affects your appearance? I believe that what we eat affects how we look and how we feel. I try to eat a lot of leafy greens and other veggies that are packed with nutrients. I also drink a lot of water to keep my skin hydrated. The skin is the body’s largest organ, so I only use cosmetics and skin care that are full of good ingredients. What goes on your skin goes in your body, and I always try to remember that when I’m making products for my own line, and selecting other products as part of my regimen. —Lisa Elaine Held
