Raise your hand if you’ve ever wrapped yourself in your flat iron cord. Or pretzeled to reach a certain part of your head because the cord didn’t reach. Or straightened your hair crouched in a corner because there wasn’t a better outlet. If your hand is up, good news: Cordless flat irons make all of those issues obsolete. Not only can you use them anywhere in your home, but you can take them on the go to touch up your hair at an event or fully style iton your lunch break. The possibilities are endless.

And the best part? Because cordless flat irons hold a charge, they eventually die, which means you never have to worry if you remembered to turn off your straightener before leaving the house, because after a while it will inevitably happen on its own.

If you’re in the market for a cordless flat iron, you need to know that there are a lot of, um, questionable options out there that either don’t get hot enough or die almost immediately.  I know this, because I’ve tested pretty much every cordless flat iron out there, and found exactly three that I think are worth the money. The Dyson Corrale Hair Straightener ($499) has amazing tech that makes it the best option for maintaining your hair health; the GHD Unplugged Styler Cordless Flat Iron ($299) is the best for on-the-go use; and the Lunata Cordless Styler Pro ($250) is all-around fabulous and the best bang for your buck. Dyson Corrale Hair Straightener — $499.00

The Corrale is the tool that put me on to cordless flat irons. I love so many things about this tool. One, it comes with a charging stand that makes keeping it on my vanity super easy. I love that I have somewhere to rest it so I don’t have to worry about singeing my vanity. The Corrale tech is also super cool—basically, the plates are made from manganese copper alloy and are flexible so they wrap around your hair, pulling it taut as you go. I have super coily 4C hair and this tool gets it straight in just one pass, cutting down the amount of heat I use.

It has three temperatures: 330°F, 365°F, and 410^°F. Typically, straighteners get up to somewhere between 420^°F to 450^°F. Dyson says the Corrale tech allows the tool to work effectively at a lower heat, and from my experience, I agree. I haven’t had any issues with the temperature.

The downsides are the weight and the battery life. Weighing in at 1.23 pounds, she’s heavier than your average straightener. And if you’ve ever taken a barre class, you know just how heavy a little bit of weight can feel after a substantial amount of time. The battery only lasts up to 30 minutes. You can stretch that by placing the tool back on the charging dock in between sections or using it in hybrid mode with the cord attached directly to the tool. Note that if you’re using it in hybrid mode, you still want to start on a full battery because you’ll still be using the battery while styling. It takes 70 minutes of charging to reach a full battery.

Overall, I love my Corrale. I usually am able to do what I need to do before the tool gives out. I love how easily it gets my hair straight without having to use a ton of heat.

GHD Unplugged Styler Cordless Flat Iron — $299.00

This GHD cordless flat iron packs a punch in a small package. It’s the ultimate travel-friendly cordless flat iron. Though you can, theoretically, take any flat iron on the go, this is the tool I’d want to have if my goal was to have something I can pop in my purse or my carry-on without taking up too much space. It comes with a chic heat-resistant carrying case and USB-C charging cable so you can charge it in your car, with your laptop, or in a traditional wall plug.

All GHD hot tools have one temperature: 365°F. The brand’s research has deemed this the optimal safe-for-hair temperature that still efficiently styles all hair types. I’ve found that the temperature works great and is hot enough for me.

Out of all the tools mentioned, this one has the shortest battery life. It says it lasts up to 20 minutes but I’ve been able to get nearly 30 minutes out of it. Unlike the Dyson, it doesn’t have a base to keep it charging while you work, so the battery life you start with is all you get. But, I’m okay with this because I don’t use it as my everyday straightener. I take it on the go and I don’t need much battery life. If you have shorter, straighter, or finer hair and don’t need much time when using a flat iron, this could be the perfect everyday tool for you.

Lunata Cordless Styler Pro — $250.00

I was honestly shocked by how much I love this Lunata tool. The brand carries a few cordless flat irons and the Pro is its top-of-the-line product. Compared to the Dyson and the GHD flat irons, this one felt the most like a traditional flat iron. Not big and bulky, not petite, just average. It’s the perfect everyday tool for someone who values a long battery life, as this one lasts up to an hour.

The Lunata Pro features a digital screen that allows you to choose a temperature between 200°F and 450°F, increasing in increments of 10°F. I love the control this tool gives you over your styling experience.

The battery life is what really makes this tool shine—it lasts 60 minutes on a single charge and takes 90 minutes to reach a full battery. It’s great if you want to take your time while styling and not have to worry about losing the battery. It’s also great if you don’t want to have to charge it every time you use it. If you still need more time, this is the only one mentioned that works while charging, giving unlimited use time. If runtime is your priority, this is the tool for you.
