Brands often use their own “firmness scale” which can be sort of helpful, but it’s important to remember that firmness feels different to everyone depending on your body size and what position you prefer to sleep in.

Side sleepers and smaller-bodied people will need a softer bed with more cushioning to relieve pressure on their hips and shoulders. Larger folks and strict back or stomach sleepers will need a firmer mattress to keep their bodies in alignment.
