“Purple shampoo works by neutralizing yellow tones in hair,” explains Michael Duenas, celebrity hair stylist and founder of Veluer Creative. “On the color wheel, purple is the opposite of yellow. It masks the yellow tones to leave a ‘whiter,’ brighter color showing through; it lives on top of the hair and is similar to using a semi-transparent stain on wood.” While purple shampoo works best on blonde-haired folks, Duenas points out that it does have a tendency to make brown hair have a slight shine increase due to the extra pigment, so brunettes can benefit, too.

How to use purple shampoo

One thing to keep in mind is purple shampoo can be tricky to use, but mostly because people tend to go overboard. “Some of the most common mistakes people make when using purple shampoo would be leaving it on for too long and over-toning their hair,” says Linh Phan, hairstylist and Schwarzkopf Professional USA Digital Artist. “If you have darker hair with orange tones, you should use a blue shampoo instead.”

Another big no-no? Washing your hair too often. “Purple shampoo should be used once a week to twice a week at most,” says Duenas. “If you use it too much, your hair will get ashy. As you overuse purple shampoo the purple pigment can sometimes build up and leave your hair looking like it has a grayish tint.”
