Concealers are the knights in shining armor of your beauty routine. They’re there to save you when your under-eye bags come out in full force, or when an errant pimple decides to make a surprise appearance. But as your skin changes with age, it can be more difficult to find one of these hero products that doesn’t cake or crease after you apply. So which ones work best on fine lines and wrinkles? We tapped Tarryn Feldman, a makeup artist based in Nashville and Los Angeles, to discover her best concealer for mature skin. Lucky for us, she had six products to share.

Not all concealers are created equal

Because your skin gets drier, and loses elasticity as you get older, you’ll want to look for a concealer that has moisturizing ingredients, like hyaluronic acid and skin-nourishing oils. These ingredients are important, because these age-related skin changes can mean that any old concealer that you grab from the drugstore might not go on as smoothly and seamlessly as it once did. The texture of these more moisturizing products will aid in the application process on mature skin, helping to provide a more natural finish.

To achieve the ever sought after “no makeup makeup” look that doesn’t look cakey, makeup artist Sharandy Osei-tutu, previously told Well+Good readers to stay “away from products that advertise themselves as matte and powdery,” and instead opt for lighter weight options that tout words like “hydrating,” “luminous,” “buildable coverage,” and “weightless” on their labels. Feldman suggests looking for formulas with antioxidants, vitamin C, and SPF, which can help prevent creasing and the dreaded “worn-out makeup” look. And as far as texture goes, she advises using creamier concealers, which dry well and won’t budge after a few hours of wear.

Equally important as the concealer you use is how you choose to apply it. According to Feldman creasing, caking, and flaking from your concealer occur as a result of your body’s natural oils coming to the surface of your skin. This, she explains, can happen if your concealer is too drying, or if it’s slathered too thick and clogging your pores as a result. To avoid this happening on a mature complexion, you’ll want to start with proper skin prep. “When prepping to put makeup on mature skin, it’s important to keep your skin hydrated, properly moisturized, and primed,” says Feldman. If your skin is properly hydrated before you apply your concealer, it’s less likely to feel tight or chapped, and your makeup will stay on better and for longer.
