Whether you’re off on a ski trip or headed to explore a cold new city, winter vacations are perfect for enjoying cool, crisp air. But as good as it feels to breathe in that air, it can seriously dry out your skin—especially if you’re more accustomed to warmer temps. When Mila Davis, an esthetician in Morristown, New Jersey, is headed to a colder climate, she doesn’t leave without a bottle of Eucerin’s $8 healing cream.

“To counter the effects of cold weather, incorporate a good, compatible moisturizer in your skincare routine,” says Davis. “My favorite products for cold-weather trips are simple, not overly expensive, and fragrance-free to avoid irritation, but are extremely effective.” She loves the Eucerin Original Healing Cream ($8) because it has a great balance of occlusive and emollient ingredients.

“Occlusives are oil or petroleum-based products, including Vaseline, mineral oil, and paraffin wax, that form a physical barrier on the skin to prevent moisture loss,” says Davis. This Eucerin cream is made with petrolatum and mineral oil. “Although products containing these ingredients are effective in protecting from moisture loss and cold harsh weather conditions they may not be suitable for everyone,” so be careful if you have oily skin.
You can use the cream on the face or body, just keep in mind that it is very thick—you can warm it up between your hands before you apply to make it easier to spread. To get the most out of it, apply it to damp skin right after you get out of the shower to lock in water or layer it over your favorite humectant serum that has ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or aloe vera. “Humectants do not form a physical barrier but instead attract water into skin cells resulting in minor swelling that gives your skin a plump appearance,” says Davis.
FWIW, she isn’t the only one who loves this cream—one reviewer says it’s her favorite face product. “I started using this cream very lightly on [my] face. What a huge difference it made,” writes Ki K. “After about a month of daily and nightly use, my skin is smooth, brighter, and looks fresher and younger than it has in recent years, and I’ve had less breakouts than I ever have. I’ve even been getting compliments on how great my skin is looking. This cream is now my favorite face product!”
Pick up a tube (or even better, a jumbo jar) so it can be your favorite face product, too.
