If you’re constantly trying to transform limp, lifeless hair into Penelope Cruz-just-got-a-blowout volume (*raises hand*), we’re right there with you. It’s not easy to fake intense volume—and to have that volume live on past lunchtime—but with a few products, it can be done. Los Angeles-based Erinn Courtney, who has “been a hairstylist for as long as I can remember,” agrees.
“Most women want volume to counteract flat or thin hair,” says Courtney. But there’s another reason. “I think women are constantly seeking volume in their hair because it can be flattering on so many face shapes too. Height can elongate and slim a lot of round or wide faces,” she says.
No matter what your face shape is, or how listless your hair can be, you can have serious volume—promise. “There are absolutely easy ways to fake volume with techniques, from blowouts to teasing, and the right volumizing and hold sprays help a lot, too,” says Courtney.

The name says it all. R+Co’s Dallas Thickening Spray will give you Texas-level volume and body, without crunchy stiffness. (No one wants that, at least not since 1998.) “Dallas is a great product to use on thinner strands to help add volume and height,” says Courtney. It gives you volume at the roots, control at the ends, and oomph all over.
Salonchic 8" Deluxe Triple Teasing Comb — $4.00
“A teasing comb is an awesome way to fake volume by teasing the root,” says Courtney. “This is a great method if your hair is thin and will fall flat even when product is used.” This Salonchic comb is inexpensive—don’t pay more for a teasing comb than you would on a morning coffee—and its low profile allows you to get close to your head to tease, while its fine teeth are really to thank for giving you volume.
Oribe Volumista Mist for Volume — $44.00
This Oribe mist is one of Courtney’s go-tos when adding volume and height with a blowout. Don’t ask us how, but the formula swells each hair shaft to bump up volume for a natural, soft (never crunchy) look. To use, lightly mist into towel-dried hair from your roots to ends, and then blow dry. Voila!
